Job Overview

The Director of Upstream Marketing, distinguishes himself/herself through exceptional leadership, communication and planning skills and the ability to positively affect results. This position develops the business’ strategic and product portfolio plans, through active and frequent partnership and communication with the global Marketing, Sales, and other functional teams. It manages and coordinates the global product roadmap, provides leading direction to the new product development process, identifies clinical data needs to support the business, and ensures the business has a robust flow of new, market-driven products. It is responsible for gathering global Voice of Customer inputs to ensure the team is truly market focused. This person is responsible for initial launch planning and preparation, and for preparing the downstream team ahead of launch. This position is also responsible for budget adherence and performance management within the department.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Participates in developing short and long range goals and objectives that align with the strategic growth plans of the company and position the company for maximum sustained growth.
  2. Product Portfolio Management
  • Partners with Global Regions, Strategy and Business Development, and R&D to develop consolidated 5 year strategy
  • Identifies product portfolio gaps and new product development opportunities
  • Screens potential new product development projects
  • Presents viable new or evolved product opportunities to senior leadership to gain approval and funding
  • Owning the Voice of Customer activities
  • Participate in KOL relationships
  • Identification of market trends, risks, and opportunities
  • Helps vet potential acquisition targets or partners with Global Strategy and Business Development
  • Member of M&A teams and integration teams as needed
  1. Market Analytics and Research
  • Identify needs for research and work with Global Strategy and Business Development to design studies or acquire research reports
  • Determine clinical study needs to support the business and work with Clinical team to determine strategy for gaining the study data


  • Education and/or Experience – Master’s degree preferred and/or equivalent experience with a minimum of 10 years proven and progressive global marketing and management experience, preferably in gastroenterology, healthcare and/or medical device industry. This position should have experience in the following areas:
  • Development of strategic partnerships
  • Managing teams with proven results
  • Ability to gain consensus and commitment
  • Familiarity with multiple channels of distribution in worldwide markets
  • Must work effectively with Senior-level executives, physicians, and leaders and staff of affiliated institutions and enterprises.

  • Broad functional experience in areas of strategic planning, portfolio and business opportunity analysis, and market research.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others.

  • Problem analysis and problem resolution at both a strategic and functional level.
  • A demonstrated ability to train, develop and lead employees to generate results.

TRAVEL:  required to travel approximately 30 – 40%.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, ability to talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to move around within the office, sit and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel and/or crouch.
