Job Overview

The R&D Project Manager manages cross-functional teams to accomplish the tasks necessary to assure that overall new product development projects are delivered on-time, within budget, and all performance requirements are met. This position manages the development of new products utilizing the design control process that is part of the Cantel / Mar Cor Purification quality system. Strong leadership, organizational and communication skills are critical as well as ability to perform in a fluctuating and fast paced environment.
The R&D Project Manager must be able to partner effectively with Marketing, Finance, Engineering, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, etc. to refine customer requirements, establish cross-functional execution plans, build and manage budgets, and prioritize activities.   This person should have a good understanding of how each project benefits both the company and the customer.  This person must be able to effectively lead a large and critical project (5 to 20 project members) that operates across different sites and global regions in a matrix environment. 

Main Responsibilities

  • Define and recommend a project team and gain approval from management for team member support.
  • Create an environment where team members feel free to speak and know that their concerns will be addressed.
  • Able to gain consensus and agreement (buy-in) from the team and management to support decisions.
  • Make decisions and adjustments to project direction, schedule, and resource allocation based upon data and facts obtained from the project team.
  • Provide positive feedback to team members for a job well done, and offers suggestions to improve when appropriate.
  • Understand and follow the design control procedure.
  • Define and develop a project plan, schedule, resource requirements, risk analysis, project cost estimates, and other required project deliverables.
  • Work with cross functional teams to establish comprehensive customer requirements and related design inputs and testing plans.
  • Manage the project’s progress towards established goals and identify and communicate project risks that may affect the expected outcome.
  • Assure that the product requirements have been met through testing and analysis.
  • Resolve problems that arise during development.
  • Track project expenses and product cost and performance against scheduled milestones.
  • Work closely with the Program Management Office to ensure that resource issues and project conflicts are managed in an objective manner with the overall goals of the business taken into account.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • BA or BS Degree in a Science or Engineering field
  • Master’s Degree (M.S., MBA or similar) preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of related medical device R&D experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a matrix R&D environment preferred
  • Project Manager (PMP) certification is preferred
  • Fluent with Microsoft Office programs (e.g. MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with contract staff and contract development houses preferred
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to objectively analyze data provided by team members to assure that conclusions are valid
  • Ability to visualize an overall picture of the project tasks and their interrelationships in order to identify potential conflicts or problems
  • Demonstrated ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical reports
  • Communicate complex information clearly in verbal and written form, effectively present information to senior staff (Phase reviews, project updates) and represent the company during on and off site meetings with entities outside the company
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit and work on a computer and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts, understand mathematical operations for statistical analysis of test data, financial data, and budgets.
  • This position may require some travel, less than 20%.
